People from minority groups usually suffer since they have no one much able to air their grievance. The most exposed to social oppression are migrants, individuals who come to the United States of America in search of better opportunities. Since these people prove to be a threat to American nationals, they tend to be subject to a lot of pain and suffering. Read more: Village Voice Media | Wikipedia
In exceptional circumstances, migrants have experienced assault, ending up either seriously injured or dead. Apart from physical harm, they lay exposed to emotional stress and without a person to vocalize their issues, they lose hope in life. However, such challenges have called for the establishment of watchdog groups; organizations that help migrants regain their dignity.
Of all the non-governmental organizations that advocate for migrant rights in America, there is none as spectacular as the Asian American Justice Center that protects the interests of Asian Pacific Americans.
One of the pillars of this great organization is to empower Asian migrants living in the United States of America so as to create a friendly and just environment for their habitation. Recently, the organization created a website so that they can keep track of cases of animosity directed towards Asian Americans. Apart from following such incidents, the website is used to expose the perpetrators of these social injustices. It is through the website that the group also links to social media sites like Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Skype, Gmail, Pinterest, and Google+ to gain a huge following.
For efficiency, the group works with a team of five top civil rights organization that operate around the world. So far, the website has helped expose people who target Asian American through hate speech and other injustices. For a long time, the perpetrators of the above crimes have gone unpunished. However, it is in 2007 that Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio got a taste of his music.
Earlier in the year, he had arrested two journalists, Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin, because the duo had revealed the existence of grand jury proceedings. Since the Sheriff’s actions tarnished Jim’s and Michael’s reputation, they sought to sue the county for damages.
In an unprecedented move, the United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit awarded Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin with a $3.75 million settlement.
Since 2007, Michael and Jim have used money from their settlement to support organizations that protect the rights and freedoms of migrants. Due to their just course, most of these groups have now been able to achieve their goals, since money proves to be a big challenge in most cases.
Lacey and Larkin mainly target organizations that operate within the greater Arizona area. Through their efforts, they want to ensure that no single individual, primarily a migrant, should ever undergo an ordeal like the one they experienced in their lifetime.
With the kind of support from people like Michael and Jim, human rights groups are more likely to succeed.
